This problem has been happening ever since I got the machine. Buying a new CD/DVD drive made no difference. Each time I put in a CD the computer freezes. I have no use of mouse, keyboard, etc.. and have to manually turn the computer off. I use windows xp. Can anyone suggest something???

1.) Use a separate IDE cables for your CdRom and your Harddisk.
2.) Use a Cd lens cleaner.
3.) Change the region settings of your DVD Rom drive. (How to do that?!) Go to the device manager, select DVD/Cdrom drives, double click to show the properties. then select dvd region. . . You can use help and support center provided by the windowsXP.

This happens to any CD/DVD that you insert rite? I think its something to do with the IDE port that the CD drive is connected to... you will need to open the desktop up and see where it is connected to.. if its directly connected to a slave IDE slot then try to use any other connections available...

for example your IDE cable that connects to your HDD will have an extra slot that you can connect to any other IDE device like other HDD or other CD Rom... Try to use that and see if it helps

if it works when you take the cd out after you put it in then it's probably a problem with the cd drive not reading the cd right. if not then it could be alot of things. try updating your drivers first.

Have you tried a new cable? Are you sure your computer "sees" the drive? That's where i would start. Good luck
