Here's my vote for an interesting and controversial hydrogen related topic. Take a look at fuel cell cars, compared to pure electric cars. In fact, rent the movie "Who Killed the Electric Car", which talks about this subject.
*
A hydrogen fuel cell car is an electric car. In place of the battery, there is a fuel cell (plus a battery, since the FCV won't have enough current to accelerate without it.)
*
This means that electric cars have to be perfected first. And a fuel cell car will be more expensive than a pure EV, since it is an EV, with a fuel cell on top.
*
But here's the kicker. See, the hydrogen is really just another battery. It takes water plus electricity to make hydrogen. Then in the fuel cell, the hydrogen turns back into electricity and water. That's a reversible chemical process to make electricity, exactly what a battery does.
*
Except the hydrogen fuel cell process, hydrogen extraction through use, is much less than 50% efficient - and battery storage can approach 90% efficient.
*
So why bother with the hydrogen?
*
Take a look at this modern electric car, and tell me why anyone needs to add a hydrogen tank to it:

The Phoenix electric pickup truck - using new, advanced Altairnano batteries (based on research from MIT) - can:

-Travel up to 250 miles per charge
-Carry 5 passengers plus cargo at 95mph.
-Charges batteries in as little as TEN MINUTES.
-Has batteries that last 250,000 miles (never need replacement.)
*
The Phoenix above was developed without government subsidies. Current government programs that support hydrogen research are probably influenced by oil interests, who could still control the infrastructure for hydrogen. These same interests would make no money at all from a pure EV.
