A desktop computer is always more powerful and more upgradable then a laptop computer. It has room to hold more components, additional drives, etc.
A laptop has the advantage of being portable. It can go with you anywhere. It can work off battery should you lose power, etc. It can run most programs on the market as well as a desktop, accept for games. They are slower on a laptop. Last year, for the first time, the number of laptop outsold the number of desktops.
So you have to decide which fits better with your lifestyle. If you are a gamer, go with the desktop. If you are a mover, go with the laptop.
