I lived in an upper-middle class community when I was younger. I moved in with my husband when I was 17 and then got pregnant 4 months before my 18th birthday. We were being careful. Well, I was using birth control and using it correctly. Right before I had met him, I moved to this town and started going to a different school. I can't tell you how many girls got pregnant while living wit their welfare moms. Most of their moms were single and lived in the housing complexes. It could be that their mothers didn't care. It could also be that they couldn't afford much else, so sex was something to pass their time.
Edit: Just because birth control works for some people, doesn't mean it works for everyone. Hell a certain person is probably infertile for all know. Think of it this way, certain medications work for some people, yet for not for others. I really hate stupid people.

There are so many factors to this I think make it a serious problem. A lack of education (and that the pull out method is NOT an effective)- and perhaps even a lack of self esteem.
Young girls who grow up with little to count on, a broken family, often dream of starting a family or "having something to call their own." (this is true of nonpoor people as well of course) I don't think that they are sitting around saying "Hmmm... I think I will get pregnant just for the money." I know that is what so many people think. Before I quit my job to be a stay at home mom I was a social worker and saw case after case of young moms. A lot of the times- they were just in love. (or thought they were) They had unprotected sex (generally not because they wanted a baby) and then the father decides to plant his seed and leave.
Of course there are those out there who intentionally get pregnant to trap a man. (We've seen them time and time again asking questions about poking holes in condoms right here on Answer Center!)
But I do believe that the majority of pregnant teens from poor backgrounds find themselves accidently pregnant, usually alone- and extremely distraught.
I know many high schools now offer parenting classes- and some require them- and not as a "hey wanna have a baby?" type class. They have babies that cry- a ton- through the night they have to take home and cannot turn off and they have to rock or move the baby's in way to placate their cries. (No shaking, that shows up on the readout!) It's an expensive class to offer for many high schools- but boy if could really save some money in the long run if more had it.

I don't really know. I had my girls at 16, and I came from an upper class area. My parents are both doctors, live in a nice house, never worry about money. It was very rare in the city I lived it for a teenage girl to get pregnant. So I do not know why poor teenagers get pregnant. I would have to say no money for birth control, or maybe the welfare money? But really no teenager can afford a baby.

I understand what you are saying. But, if you really take a look at things. There are ALOT of teenagers out there that have had babies and succeeded in life. My mother had my brother at 16 and she's a Attorney. I had a baby at 17 and I'm a RN and was in the military. I'm highly educated and NEVER was on welfare. I took care of my daughter and had several friends that was the same way. I didn't live off my family and other people's taxes.
Also if you take a real good look. Some teenagers that actually have babies and you ask them why they did it? They say cause they feel loved. A child gives a mother unconditional love. No matter what that mother does, the child will love her unconditionally until she is old enough to really make her own decision towards her mother. It's the teenagers reaching out for the attention their own mother isn't giving. So what better way to get the feeling they are looking for? Have a baby. Even though it may be wrong, we are talking about a teenage mind that isn't fully developed yet.
It's basically the will power of the person. They have a choice. They can take it and get educated to take care of their child properly. Or take the welfare way out with lack of education and live in poverty, not to mention living off our taxes.
Life is full of choices. It's just if you make the right one or wrong ones. Our nation is just LAZY anymore. People take the easiest way out.

The poor have barriers most of us don't think about. In order to go to a doctor you must have insurance and a car to get there. There is always Planned Parenthood that takes Medicaid, however not all poor people get Medicaid. Some simply have no insurance. And there is still a need for transportation to Planned Parenthood. Public transportation is not available everywhere.
It's hard enough to get teens to be responsible about birth control without the added barriers of being poor.

Not all girls are getting pregnant from the Poor backgrounds.
I don't get why so many do get pregnant when you can go to the health department and get on birth control for free.
I started having sex when i was 16 years old with my boyfriend (now husband). We have been together for almost 12 years but married for only one year. We have a 5 year old son together.
Anyhow when we started having sex, i went to the health department on my own I got on birth control free because i told them that my family did not have insurance cause at first i didn't want my mom to know but i told her though that same day. She was glad that i did, i sure as hell did not want to have a baby in my teens.
If girls would just go to the doctor or to the health department and get on birth control so many would not be getting pregnant and it only takes about an hour out of your life to be checked then for them to give you the birth control.
If parents would stop acting like their kid is so damn perfect and would not be having sex and just go put them on birth control that would help too.
I, myself do not believe in "Accidents". I think that they mean to get pregnant and i really could care less what people say about being on birth control and getting pregnant anyways.
I was on the shot for nearly 4 years and did i get pregnant? NO
When we decided to get pregnant i stopped the shot and became pregnant 11 months later. I only have one child so far and i am 27 years old. Most people my age have 3-4 or more kids.
I am not sure if i want anymore. It takes alot to raise a kid.
I think if your too stupid or poor to buy a 75 cent condom then you don't need to be having sex.
(Why would anyone use sex as a pastime?(That makes no sense at all)

Teenagers usually get pregnant because lack of experience and thinking. They think having sex is fun, therefore, they dont think of what happen next. Of course, sometimes because of poor background, they dont seem to care if they got pregnant, if they do care, it is already happening.
I think all teenagers should be aware of sex and what effect it might causes if they do get pregnant. Having a child creates a lot of times ,effort, and responsibilties. You want the best for your child as well as your life, therefore, teenagers are too young to think about the future.

In my first year as a Psyc. major and I looked at many cases of teen pregnancies and my basic conclusion would be these girls either think their life is and will remain stuck in poverty forever so don't care. Or, feel so extremely forgotten and unloved they trick themselves into thinking a baby will bring them happiness and give them some sort of love in their life. I love how you quoted "accidently" I truly believe the greatest sacrifice of all - is giving up your flesh and blood for adoption in order to give them a better life than one can provide.. -Hope that answered your question.

Because single parent households are the number cause of poverty in America. It creates of vicious cycle of fatherless children, sex without commitment, poor healthcare, and uneven sex ratios that leads to an imbalance of power between the sexes that leads to more fatherless children.
