Hydration of an alkyne, C6H10, gave two ketones in approximately equal amounts. Which of the following alkynes would be expected to give these results? (A) 1 -hexyne, (B) 2-hexyne, (C) 3-hexyne, (D) 3,3-dimethyl-1-butyne. Please explain your answer.

In 2-hexyne, there is nothing really different about the two ends of the triple bond - there are no H atoms on either. So hydration can occur either way.

The same is true for 3-hexyne, but the two products are the same in this case.
