The gross amount produced is 4 ATP. However, the process itself requires energy, which uses 2 ATP molecules. Hence, the net amount of energy produced is 2 ATP. (4-2=2)

If the gross is 4, that's how much is produced overall.

The net being 2 means that out of the gross (4), 2 were used up. Only 2 remain.
