The focus is the point where the earthquake occurs first. You can also call it as hypocenter. But the epicenter is the point above the focus on earth. The hypocenter (or focus, though I've heard hypocenter used more often) is the place within the Earth where the earthquake originated, such as the actual area of the fault that ruptured. The epicenter is a point on Earth's surface directly above the hypocenter.

the focus is the source from the bottom, where the plates are. The epicenter is the source from the surface of the land.
