Good question. To me, and this is my personal opinion-that a lot of Blacks are still in that "slave mentality". For example how we get caught up with light skinned/dark skinned, good hair/bad hair. Even economic and educationl status. I had a friend who held a BS in Business, but a group of black women at her job didn't want to have anything to do with her b/c they all had Master's degrees. It's crazy. I used to have that "slave mentality" as well, but once I got saved, I did a 180 degree turn around. It's good to know the effects of past slavery conditions on todays Blacks, but the real question is what can we do to change it?

A few definite effects of past slavery are the prejudice, racism, stereotyping, and discrimination that still lingers in parts of American society today...
Just read through some of the answers on Yahoo! That should give you a small inkling of the racism and misinformation that still exists just below the surface etc...

There are none. During slavery, post-slavery and Jim Crow; the black family was still intact. They even had a work ethic. Ever since the black 'leadership' (Jesse Jackson in particular) embraced Marxism; no negative actions were ever their fault. Although society has suffered greatly; no one has suffered more than the *****. 70% of born out-of-wedlock and how many of those are bastar.ds, no one really knows. They do think the white massa has the duty to come to their rescue but whites -and hispanics and asians, have had enough. Their days in the socialist sun is coming to an end esp. in states with high Mexican populations.

Of course it had no direct effect on any of us because it happened so long ago. BUT...whenver an entire culture is deprived of EVERYTHING belonging to them, this includes self-respect, our own homeland, humanity (they were shackled & beaten like animals), the right to education, their authentic names....when a race is stripped of all of this and forced to start over from absoloutely nothing, when blacks were constantly told all the way up until the 70's (and still now actually) that we aren't even human but more like apes, it does take a toll on the entire race thereafter.
Now i'm not one for the excuses, and pullin the race card at every chance. Because blacks of today, we do have opportunities to get ahead if we bust our a.sses to get it. I have done it. My parents have done it. So we can all do it if we work hard at it. BUT i would be a fool to believe that just because slavery happened hundreds of yrs ago, that it was all done in vain. Our ancestors didnt go through all of that demoralization for us to forget about it and say "what's done is done. Its in the past."
