Do Muslim girls get circumcised? Why?

I was reading an article about Ayaan Hirsi Ali and it was saying somthing about genital mutilation.

I am not Muslim but I am a woman. I just don't understand why a person would want to have that done to their daughters.

I have a friend that is married to a Arab muslim and he was saying have his daughter circumcised.

Religious aspects of the practice

Whatever the origin of female circumcision, it did not originate in the Islamic tradition, contrary to popular belief. Both Muslims and Christians have circumcised their daughters since early times, and there is considerable evidence that the practice existed long before Christianity and Islam. There is no question that female circumcision preceded Islam in Africa.

In relation to Islam there are some sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) which are interpreted differently by Islamic scholars. In one of these sayings the Prophet (PBUH) says to Umm Atteya, "If you circumcise do not go deep (i.e. do not encroach on the clitoris) because it would be useful to the wife and desirable to the husband ".

The majority of Islamic scholars doubt the authenticity of these hadiths. This view was supported by the recent declaration of the present Sheikh (head) of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Tantawi, basing his declaration on many references, old and new, and among them some eminent Islamic scholars such as Sheikh Shaltout, a previous head of Al-Azhar.

Another previous Sheikh of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Gad El-Haqq, was in favor of the authenticity of these hadiths and thus, favored circumcision, but on the condition that "it should not cut the clitoris or any part of it." "Only a part of the skin of the hood should be removed." "The operator should pay compensation if he removes or injures the clitoris".

The psychological aspect of human sexual arousal is a complex phenomenon that is not fully understood by experts. It involves emotions, concepts of morality, past experience, acceptance of eroticism, fear of disease or pregnancy, dreams, and fantasies. The combination of physical messages from sensory organs and the emotional images culminate in a psycho-physiological state during which a person is able to experience orgasm. The erection of the clitoris is only secondary to the higher center stimulation in which its function is to lead the stimulation to its destination and orgasm during a sexual act. So whether the clitoris is present or absent it makes no difference as regards chastity, as it has a secondary role.

In Muslim countries, the men want the women to remain pure and chaste until they take a husband. Their vaginal openings are made so small that they are only big enough to allow the release of blood and plasma during periods. Also, without a clitoris, the women no longer receive as much gratification from sex. The men see the women as sexual tools and objects. They do not want them to have their independence. This is terribly cruel and should be abolished.

thanks on your question. that's always sturdy at the same time as human beings can practice others in the way that you basically did. a lot of human beings have reviews about issues in accordance to lack of information. I actually have seen terrorists on the different hand, as inaccurate loopy those who selfishly damage others to bigger their reason. You get a majority of those persons everywhere. I agree - that's not the religion of someone, yet particularly their political views that reason someone to finish a terrorist act. It is not Islamic, but rather more African cultural, mis-wrapped with religion. The Islamic community does speak against it, but to one another, not to the world. Remember Islam does not have a central leader, thus no one united voice to be heard.....an Islamic Pope for example.

It is truly barbaric practice founded on myth and misinformation.

It isn't a muslim practise but a tribal one. It is practised in many parts of Africa where islam is not present.

& women perpetuate it...not men. From mother to daughter...

Some. Its not just muslims.

Why...to control women. It is to make sex painful so that we sinful whorish women don't stray from our great kings of men.

Its HORRIFYING. The worst one is when they cut off your clitoris and sew up the lips of your vagina leaving just enough space for urine to flow...feels like you are being ripped open during sex...

not by choice. it's done to keep them from enjoying sex, so they won't cheat on their husbands.

i think that it should stop, and the men who perpetuate it should be given like treatment.
