Pros - High quality nutrient rich soil that makes for excellent small scall farming. Mountains with snow on top are a good source of clean drinking water. Excellent understanding of volcanoes makes it fairly easy to tell when a volcano is about to erupt. Natural beauty of mountains.

Cons - There will likely be a lot of seismic activity that could damage or destroy man made structures, and can also cause landslides. Eruptions cause many different dangers -- Danger from actual lava flows. Danger from pyroclastic flows. Danger from volcanic gasses (CO2 will settle into low lying areas and suffocate people in the area). Danger from lahars (mud flows caused by volcanic activity). I could go on, but you get the idea - eruptions are dangerous.

All good info. To add to it, I've seen active volcano's In Costa Rica that people actually live on. Well, at the base anyways.

These 2 volcano's erupt pretty often, but only on one side(opposite to where the people live lol). Agriculture is awesome in the area. I've never had a sweeter mango than one from that area.

The cons are that the volcano could potentially errupt and kill you. The pro I guess is that your natural water sources will probably be warm so you can swim in them without being cold.

Pros: Mineral rich soil, mineral hot springs, geothermal power

Cons: Potential explosion, mud/ash slides, generally high relief topography (very rocky and steep landscapes), poisonous gas emissions, high heat/lava flow.
