I have a Urinary Tract Infection. I went to the after hours doctor last night, because I was in so much pain, those of you who have ever had one know what I'm talking about. I already knew what it was when I started hurting, because I've had one before. I get to the doctor and they do a urine test, and find puss, and protein in my urine. So he perscribes me some antibiotics (ciprofloxacin 500MG), and some pain pills. I got up this morning and took the antibiotic with a full glass of water just like it says, and not even 20 minutes later it makes me throw up. The last time that I had a UTI I was also perscribed antibiotics, and they made me feel like crap, but I never threw up. So my question is, do I need to tell the doctor to put me on a different kind, or do I keep taking these until my body gets used to them? I mean it seems like they wouldn't work if I was throwing up after I take it, right? What should I do?

Nausea and vomiting is a side effect: the most frequently reported drug related events, from clinical trials of all formulations, all dosages, all drug-therapy durations, and for all indications of ciprofloxacin therapy were nausea (2.5%), diarrhea (1.6%), liver function tests abnormal (1.3%), vomiting (1.0%), and rash (1.0%).

Call the prescriber and let them know what happened. They may want you to try another dose or maybe switch it to another medication.

I hope this helps.

Before you take the antibiotic, eat some food. Also drink Plenty of fluid (some people say water, some say cranberry juice). If you continue to throw up when taking the medicine talk to your doctor. There are several broad spectrum antibiotics they can prescribe that may not make you sick.

If antibiotics make you throw up why not try the medicine which in former years was the star performer in UTI's its generic name is nalidixic acid / phenazopyridine. It is sometimes sold under the brandname Pirifur. And yes take a lot of liquid preferably an infusion from a diuretic like hibiscus flower; you can get that in the markets or shops selling Mexican products under the name flor de Jamaica ) or leek. And of course tell your doc.

Eat some light breakfast or snack before taking your antibiotic.

And you are right, if the antibiotic is not absorbed in the body you will not get any better.

I AGREE WITH RICK.
TRY TO EAT FIRST AND TAKE ONE MORE DOSE. IF IT MAKES YOU SICK YOU NEED TO CALL THE DOC SO THEY CAN PRESCRIBE YOU SOMETHING ELSE.

A UTI WILL NOT GO AWAY ON ITS OWN AND CAN MAKE YOU VERY ILL.DRINK PLENTY OF WATER

ANOTHER THOUGHT DID YOU TAKE CIPRO AND PAIN MED AT SAME TIME??
PAIN MED CAN UPSET YOUR STOMACH TOO
GOOD LUCK I HOPE YOU FEEL BETTER SOON!

It might be best to take it with food. Also drink plenty to help flush out infection.
