It depends on what you want to do.

Marines are the hardest, but you develop character that many young people are lacking.

Air Force is easier, but require higher levels of schooling due to the technical aspects.

Navy is good for seeing the world.

Army is a good generalist branch (you can do many different things with some travel).

US Coast Guard is easiest, but provide civilian related skills, based primarily in the US and you are actually doing something besides training.

I am in the Army. (I retire in 2 years.) So of course I am going to tell you to join the Army. But you might look at it like picking a college. What do you want, and what do they offer?

The Air Force Recruiter will tell you that a higher QT score on the ASVAB is required to enlist. (Which is true.) And that the AF only employs smart people. (Think about it. Is a written test the sole basis for determining intelligence and common sense?) The AF does not have Combat Arms. No Infantry, no Armored, and no Field Artillery. Promotion is quick in the early pay-grades. But testing is required to advance further. (It is common to retire in the AF as an E-6, but as an E-7 in the other branches.) Also, you don’t just walk in and become a pilot. See if the Recruiter will tell you what the process is. Many AF Bases are in the middle of nowhere. (My apologies to anyone near Malmstrom AF Base in Montana. Never heard of it? How about Ft Benning, GA?)

My personal opinion about the Navy is that I would not want to be stuck on a ship for six-months at sea. Don’t let the Recruiter tell you that you can get a job where you never go to sea. That’s like the Army Recruiter telling you that you will never be in the woods.

The USMC have an esprit de corps all their own. “Once a Marine, always a Marine.” But you are infantry first. You might score high enough on the ASVAB and have choice of your job, but that is rare. The Recruiter should also point out that the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is a Marine.

The Army offers job choices. If you want to work on computers, and score high enough, you should be able to get that job. The Army has bases literally all over the world. So, just like the Navy you can travel. A woman wrote “In the army and marines, no matter what your recruiter tells you, you will go to Iraq.” She is wrong. 18 years and I have not deployed. I am sure I am not the only Soldier who has not been in harms way. I have just been fortunate. And of course I cannot say you will NOT go to Iraq.

All the branches offer the Montgomery G.I Bill for school. (Right now it is about $36,000.)
All branches pay the same. An E-1 in the Army gets the same as an E-1 in the AF.
All the branches offer the opportunity to serve your country.

Good Luck. I hope that you don’t back down and choose none of them.

Definately join the air force. You have less chance of dying that way..only 30 ppl. have died in that branch. It would be more interesting too, especially if you could become a pilot. That is what I would join if I were to go in the military. You also get money for college and two years of schooling while in the military.

I'm a junior in college and I don't know what to major in, so I decided to enlist, too. Therefore I talked to recruiters from all the branches. I like the Army the best. This is probably because they can guarantee me the MOS I want in my contract. Also, the Army is what people think of when they think of the military. It is so vast, you'll get to meet people from all walks of life.. not just lazy nerds (AF) or hard-core, white trash "killers" (Marines). You'll get nerds AND white trash in the Army... plus a bunch of people in between. That's just what I think, though. I'm still in the enlisting process.

There are dirt bags and really cool people in all of the branches.... and there are positives in negatives in all of them too. They all serve a purpose.

I suggest talking to all the recruiters.... don't let them intimidate you when you go see another one after talking to them. Who cares what they think? They're recruiters.

Go into the Navy, for sure.

My husband has 10 years in the Navy and he LOVES it. In fact, he's a recruiter right now.

Let me break it down for you:

In the army and marines, no matter what your recruiter tells you, you will go to Iraq.

A lot of people go into the air force to fly, and travel...why? The Navy has more pilots and a larger quantity of jets. If you going into the Air Force, you'll be station in Oklahome and you'll be fueling jets watching Navy Pilots fly them. According to surveys, the air force also has a lower "quality of life" rating and it's more difficult to advance in pay grades.

When you go into the Navy, you actually will travel. My husband has been to Spain 3 times, Italy, Bahrain (which he loved), England, and tons of other places.

Well you take your pick......I personally picked Army because of all the adventure that I have done since I joined. Been in the Army for 15 years.........only 5 more before retirement. 80 credit hours since I have been in; payed for. Still have 38,000 for college for when I retire. Happily married and traveled around the world and back again.
