It all depends on the acid or base in question. In general the lower or higher the pH the more damage it can do to skin, ot other organs if shallow or if it gets into your eye. Other dangers occour on on the kind and conc, acetic acid in high concs is harmfull yet in small concs you can safety use it on your chips or food like wise with citric acid or vit c.

However there are some acids that dangerous no matter that concs take HF or hydrofloric acid, if you get any of this on your skin you have to apply an anti-dote cream as once in your system it will dissolve your bones and do other nasty things to you.

Strong acids are corrosive (battery acid). Strong bases are caustic (lye). Either can kill or cause serious injury if consumed or come in contact with your skin or eyes. Weak acids and bases can be irritating but dangerous is a bit of a stretch. Alka Seltzer is basic but if used properly is not dangerous at all. Orange juice has ascorbic acid (vitamin C)which is beneficial to your health and a deficiency can cause health problems.

sturdy acids like sulfuric, H2SO4, and robust bases like sodium hydroxide, NaOH, are the two risky. vulnerable acids like acetic (vinegar), ascorbic (diet C), citric (flavoring), or maybe hydrochloric (5% interior the tummy) are inocuous. vulnerable bases like baking soda, sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO3, are utilized in cooking or eaten in pills for "acid abdomen." So be careful what you label as "risky."
