the muscles are relaxed around the vertebre, so they just pop, the pressure is released from them.

I have had a bad neck most of my life but I'm too chicken to go to one. I'm afraid of getting paralyzed and I'd rather live with the minor pain, stiffness, and discomfort. I do my own neck cracking - since its my own hands and neck I know exactly how much pressure I'm applying, and I don't do any sudden snapping moves. I've been told by a doctor that I can't get paralyzed from doing this, but I don't fully believe him - but I think I'm 99.999% safe.
Most chiropractors do what they do because they weren't smart enough to get into medical school to become real doctors, although what they do is more mechanical so they probably don't have to be all that smart. But I think at some point I will take my chances and try it to see if it helps.
