You ever watch the movie "The French Connection"? What the guy with the switchblade does after cutting open a key of heroin, is determine the melting point.
I doubt he was capable of any more sophisticated measures of chemical purity than that.

I think it is the melting point.
There will be a difference in the melting point from theoritical prediction if the compound is not pure.
