each shell (upto neon) can hold only 8 electrons, the 1st shell can hold only 2 electrons.

Since carbon has the molecular number 6, it has 6 electrons. The 1st 2 electrons go in the 1st shell and the rest (4) go in the second shell.

the atomic weight of carbon is six which means there are six protons and six electrons in the atom. the first shell can hold 2 the second shell then hold's the remaining four.
