I think you need to take a trip to www.safepiercing.org. That is the official site for information on how to maintain a safe piercing.
I am very surprised that they did not explain the procedure to you where you got your piercing done. That is not very responsible of them to pierce you and not inform you.
Most body piercings should remain in place for 3 months before you change them.
Make sure you use anti-bacterial soap like dial to wash it, only use SEA salt to soak it, do this twice a day for the first two weeks or so until it's mostly healed. DO NOT USE table salt! It is not the same thing! Never use any antibiotic ointment like Neosporin, that causes the skin to grow over the piercing and you will end up with an infection the likes of which you can't imagine, and the piercing will never heal!
Good luck and take care of yourself and your piercing.

When I got mine I had to wait 10 months to change it. Because once you keep messing with it, it's so easy for it to get infected. PS I've had mine pierced 4 years now.

When it's fully healed. About 3 months. Consult a professional body piercer. I did mine early (had to take it out for MEPS) and it got really irritated, and a little infected. I don't recemmend doing it early. If you really want to change it, try just chaning the ball on it.
