You should repost this question in a psychology section. The biggest effect is the development of a behavioral addiction. Most of these energy drinks contain huge amounts of caffeine which is chemically addictive, but even if not, heavy marketing plus tons of sugar = behavioral addiction. People start seeking out those drinks (just as they do coffee and cigarettes) to "fix" problems. Of course sugar spike in your blood means sugar low in your blood an hour or two later, causing you to get another drink, and increasing lifetime risk of diabetes. If you consider addiction irrational, then there's your answer. Since the specific "chemicals" they put into the various drinks vary from drink to drink I don't think there's a standard answer for any of the specific ones. But just the sugar and caffeine will make you addicted.
