Also, I have to get it into the thousands, so, wouldn't I just divide the number in half until I got down to a number in the thousands?

Multiply the length of the pencils times 6.022 x 10^23, then convert that number of inches to miles, then divide by the distance in miles from the earth to the sun.

well, a mole is 6.022 * 10^23. multiply 8 inches by this number and divide by 12 to get feet. this number is the distance (total) of a mole of pencils. now find the distance to sun and divide the earth to sun distance by the total distance of pencils. that is your answer
