What effects does a surface area per gram of solute on the rate of solubility?

Would a solute with high surface area/gram be coarse or fine?

In general, for a given shape, the only thing that really affects the surface area/mass ratio is the density of the material. But a greater surface area would lead to faster disolving since there is more 'area' over which the solute can go into solution.
