Sending email to a soldier is just as easy as sending email to anyone else. If you are talking about real mail, you need to have his correct address. You said somethig about unit # and "initials." I assume you means something like I have below . If you have all of that info just put it in the example format that I provided. It will get there.

Soldier name (NO RANK- security reasons)
HHC/ 2-5 CAV
Unit Number 43231
APO AE 09344

I'm not sure what you're looking for as an answer.

His email address should be:
first name.last name@us.army.mil

If he has a common name- like Don Hall (a fellow I was in Iraq with) he may use his middle initial or full middle name. Other than that, you don't need any unit designators unless you send something snail mail. Then you will need his APO or FPO, unit, etc.

Hope this helps.

Use the No Rank option. Using a Rank (or Navy Rating) is a security issue; please refrain from using it. No need to identify the person's rank/rate - the letter will get to the intended recipient (on shore or on a ship).

Regardless if the recipient is in a combat zone or not, the Military Post Office is not going to send a letter/package "back to sender" just because rank/rate is omitted on the item.

Also, please ensure you write LEGIBLY because too many letters and packages fail to reach their recipients because of illegible writing. Tip: Use your computer to generate lables (using sticky lables or plain paper and glue/tape it into place) because you can use a larger font to help the postal workers easily read, sort, and ship the letter/package to the recipient.

Good Luck!
