Just maintain it in accordance to your car's maintenance plan, by taking the car in to a mechanic at the right interval. If you have to service the vehicle every 10000 Kilometres or 6 months, then make sure you keep up the schedule.

Other than that, the only other things that are good to know are:
a) How to change a tire.
b) How to check the oil
c) how to check the coolant level & brake fluid level
d) how to check the tire pressure

If you are not sure, ask someone you trust to show you. I usually check them every two weeks or so

The rest can be left to the mechanic. By the way, you are not dumb. Its a fair question to ask.

Doing the maintenance listed in your owners manual is a good place to start. It will be listed by mileage on what you should do to your vehicle. Take it to a reputable shop to have work done on it. Keep the outside clean to keep the paint in good shape. But read through the owners manual and you will find any information you will need and what they recommend.

Get a Haynes Repair Manual at the local Auto Zone or auto parts store in your area. It will troubleshoot and show you how to fix your vehicle. Also on the Auto Zone site has a section for vehicle maintenance

Plain and simple.

<>Start simple: Learn how to check tire pressure and wear and all your engine fluids and do it weekly (see the sites listed below). Next, learn how to change your own oil. Once you got that down, read about some more advanced stuff, like flushing your cooling system or changing a thermostat (stuff that should be done every year). You might want to get a Chilton or Haines manual for your car (they explain minor and major repairs in detail, including dis-assembly and re-assembly). Without having to go to mechanics school, you can easily learn how to change brakes, replace a radiator, alternator or water pump, and do a number of other (normally) costly repairs for a fraction of the money. Talk to guys who work on their own cars and join a couple on-line DIY forums. Find a mechanic you can trust (they really are not all women-hating thieves!) and ask questions...a lot of them are happy to explain things without BS-ing you. Good luck....I used to love working on my own wheels (till I got old and lazy! :)
