How do I find out what the Oxidized species is and what the Reduced Species is?

MnO4- o.n.(Mn)= +7
Mn2+ o.n.=+2
so Mn goes from +7 to+2 : reduced specie

Fe2+ o.n. = +2
Fe3+ o.n. =+3
so Fe goes from +2 to +3 : oxidized specie

Use the valence rule method. oxygen is alway -2, H is alway +1 etc. If the valance is lowered, it is the reduced species. If the valance is increased, it is the oxidixed species. In this case, Mn drops form +7 to +2, while iron goes from +2 to +3.
