I have a 11 week old Dachshund with a lower abdominal hernia. The vet is wanting to do spay and surgery at the same time and is talking about upping the spay date when she is 4 months old. Oppinions? Does anyone think this is unsafe? I would appreciate any experiences with hernias in dogs and honest oppinions.

Perfectly safe!! Even better for the pet.

We do spay and neuters at 6-8 weeks and it is best to do it all at once while the pup is under anesthesia. Neither surgery is as hard on the pup as the anesthesia. Vetting has come a long way and this is very rarely an issue anymore. Get it done she will also be old enough for a rabies and final round of shots. I like to get the pups rabies while they are still knocked out.

After it is all done you will have a few days of recoup time and then you will never know she was even at the vet but she will be set for a year.

This is not unsafe at all. Hernias are not uncommon and can easily be fixed. It is best to do it during the spay, this way she only has to go through surgery once. 4-6 months is the normal range for a spay so it's not being done too early. There is nothing to worry about.

Umbilical hernia is actually pretty common in dogs. And its simple to repair. So, might as well do a spay and hernia repair at the same time. It'll take maybe another 5-10 minutes more than a normal spay, but then the dog doesn't have to risk general anaesthetic twice.

It sounds like it is an inguinal hernia, and they need to be fixed asap (but it usually is not an emergency). Spaying a 4 months should not harm the dog, it is just a little harder for the vet to find the uterus and overies.
