Mom always told me to scrape the labels off pickle jars and peanut butter containers and soup cans before recycling. Why? What happens at the recycling factory if you don't?

And how about recycling paper - do you have to remove staples? Why?

Labels do not have to be removed, and neither do staples. The labels dissolve away in the machinery, and staple parts are magnetically removed.

I think it depends on your location. In this city you do not have to remove labels, but they do ask they they be rinsed clean. You can recycle plastic bottles, but not their caps. Here we can put glass, cans and plastic in the same bag that has to be blue. Other places require that it all be sorted.
Paper can be recycled. Staples can not.
