You have to realize that there's more than one type of owl. Generally speaking the females are larger than the males, however without knowing the species I can't really give the logistics, since there is considerable variation between the size of the various species, for example even the smallest of male great-horned owls will dwarf the biggest female saw-whet owl. In scientific studies where you can take a close look at the bird (ex bird banding) females can be identified by the presence of a brood patch when they are nesting. Then in some species there can be a little plumage variation, if you look at an adult male snowy they can often be pure white whereas a female or a younger bird will have considerably more brown, the more brown feathers the higher the odds it's a female. If you are thinking of acquiring an owl please don't... They are not pets, in most areas it is unlawful to have one without proper licensing (since you do not know how to sex an owl I doubt you have the skill to get a license), simply put they are better left in the wild. If you want more specific information to try and assess if an owl is male/female find the species on http://www.owlpages.com/owls.php?genus=all and look in it's profile, it may take some time to get an idea of what is big for a species and what is not when you see them in the wild.
