If sound has burned out can I use a pci sound card

Try this, your Sound drivers may be glitched or whatever.

Go to Control Panel
Click on System
Click on Hardware
Click on Device Manager
Click on the + by Sound,video,game Contollers

*IF* you see any Yellow & Black ! point or Red X REMOVEE them

Shutdown your computer, NOT RESTART

Wait at least minutes then restart computer

Windows SHOULD find and REinstall the drivers

Note: Even IF you don't see the above mentioned ! or X, just remove the sound card drivers anyway, then do the Shutdown procedure

Its more likely that vista has not found any drivers suitable for your integrated sound. Try running windows update if you haven't or try finding out what chipset the sound uses and find a driver for that.
