Software firewalls, especially, ZA, Mcaffee, and Norton eat up alot of resources and will, in time, cause issues on your pc and slow it down alot. If you have a router, that is firewall enough. If you have an extra pc, build it into a real firewall, smoothwall makes it easy to do. Best thing to do is get a simple adware/virus scanner that is free and won't take up alot of resources. Avoid the big name brands, they are a waste of money.

A hardware firewall such as a Router is the best but as far as a software firewall go with zone alarm. ZoneAlarm Pro is the top-rated firewall program by almost every source that has reviewed the program.

Comodo firewall pro is the way to go. it has passed every leak test which means people probably will never see what you are doing online.

sygate firewall is very good, but I think Norton/symantic bought them and remover the software. It still may be avalable from somewhere.

you should also concider the built in windows firewall, it is actualy fine although not perticualy configurable it works fine.
