It depends on what type of engine! Some have different length push-rods for exhaust or intake and if you mix them up and start the motor you will bend a valve. Other motors have same size push-rods throughout the motor. Holding the push-rods in your hands and looking at them it should be very easy to determine if the push-rods are different lengths. Most motors i am acquainted with the length of the push-rod motors push-rods when stood on end on the table one would be very much shorter then the other enough that you can tell just be looking at them. So if the push-rods you have are different lengths it is very much imperative that they go in the proper place or as I said before you will bend the valve in the head if you mix up the push-rods of different lengths the head then must be removed and the bent Valve or valve's replaced. If the push-rod is to long for the hole it holds the valve open to long therefore the piston strikes the valve their-by bending the valve. So make sure that the valves for your motor i.e. intake and exhaust are the same size otherwise DON'T mix them up! Regards GMdave.

The rods go .........umph...... and then, go wherever they want. 'An' engine with mixed up pushrods will run until the rods are pushed through the engine. And, if you've ever seen this happen you're lucky. The aforesaid pushrods could poke right through YOUR BODY.

If they're all of equal length, you're likely in the clear. If there is a difference between intake & exhaust valve pushrods, you're in for a problem.

they are all the same. I have hear many stories, lot of bulls.

after Your calibrate the lifters, the pushrods will never know, whether they are tall or short.
one set for intake and one for exhaust.

the fact is ,they need to be pre-load of oil.

Mechanic ,my whole life.

It will still run but like the other guy said, they each wear individually to fit the tappet and rocker arm.

Be more careful next time! That is, unless this is a Briggs and Stratton.
