Can anyone point to an incident where someone was wronged and the Patriot Act aided in wronging that individual? For all I hear about it, I can't see a single case of an individual suffering on account of this law. I read the report, and many are taking it as smoking gun proof that the Patriot Act is bad (it is dangerously worded and subject to abuse...) but it also does a lot to help our government protect us from terror. The report mostly documents the inability of the FBI to document its operations, and that is nothing new...

Please do not post to say there is nothing, only post if you have evidence of an incident. And don't just post to attack other people, let's be mature here...

I have a friend who has lost his identity, the birth certificate was burnt up in a fire, and his sister stole his social security card and ran off. Because he has neither he cannot get his ID back and drive, because with the Patriot act you must have one to get a hold of the other, or else you can't get ID. He is now homeless again.

So yes I know someone who has been ill affected by the Patriot Act.

I do not know of a specific incident, and agree with your sentiments. If there is real abuse under the Patriot Act, I guarantee you that there are lawyers who would be trying to file lawsuits and attempting to collect major economic settlements under this act. While there is principle saying that the government should be judgment proof in situations like this, I am sure with the nature of our legal system, some court out there would grant peple truly abused by the act some form of relief.

That said, I think the next President, Republican or Democrat, will scale the Patriot Act back because the public is becoming more complacent about terrorism.

Completely innocent people are unable to have their names removed from the no fly lists. This is not stricly an American problem it has spread like a fungus to Canada.

Hmm Maher Arar may not be a name you are familiar with - he was falsely accused of being a potential danger and shipped from the US (where the Cdn Citizen was visiting or stopping over on a flight) and sent to a prison in Syria that tortures for years without the benefit of legal counsel.

It was all a big mistake and the only thing he was guilty of was not being white and christian.

No. The patriot act is the best thing that ever happened to this country! Let's face it folks, that old bill of rights and constitution thing was old and warn out anyway. Thank god "W" had the Patriot act written and waiting in the wings 6 months before 9/11. I think we should give up as many liberties and rights as possible as long as it keeps us safe from the terrorists who hate us because of those rights. What a brilliant leader "W" is. God bless him.

because of the fact Obama, the media and the bleeding coronary heart liberals are enjoying a surprising game of deception. there is not any rationalization why Obama could additionally be a presidential candidate. He has no accomplishments for example management. He knows no longer something in terms of national protection and international subject concerns. And the actuality that maximum of persons are helping him proves that society is thoroughly out of touch with the way the international works in the event that they so definitely succumb to speeches that point out in user-friendly terms generalities and scarcity substance.

There's plenty of cases, but two good examples are James Yee and Brandon Mayfield.

James Yee was an army chaplain at Guantanamo Bay who was accused of spying and locked in solitary confinement for 76 days. All the charges were dropped.

Brandon Mayfield was an Oregon lawyer who was suspected of being involved in the Madrid train bombings. He was arrested and held without charges for two weeks before being released.

Both are American citizens.

Not that I know of. People at work tell stories about a guy that's a friend of their sister-in-law's neighbor (or somebody similar) that was arrested or taken in for questioning, but nobody ever knows a name and nothing ever appears in the newspaper.

By all means, let's wait until the potential for abuse is realized, rather than prudently heading that off. Then, when it happens, when an unscrupulous politician uses it to screw a political dissenter, most people will react, "That didn't happen to ME, so I don't care!"

Yes- Im loosing my patriotism - with every freedom the government takes through the patriot act.

The Neo-Con facists have suspended the 4th amendment - just think people - they are referring to this mid-east war as your childrens-childrens war - therefore, expect your Constitution to be suspended indefinitely.

You'll notice that it hasnt ended the war on drugs
