The trouble with "outing" a politician who opposes gay issues is that such a course of action can easily end up becoming a matter of blackmail: "Vote the way we want you to, or else!"

I don't think that it is acceptable to 'out' any gay person regardless of their job or post. Not all gay people agree on all issues and I find it difficult to imagine how one would determine whether or not the politician is being hypocritical.
I don't need to know where my politicians buy their socks, if they like to be tied up, if they are gay, etc. All I need to know is how they will vote on the issues.

I think it would be to the benefit of any established politician to "come out" if they were gay, especially if they have a very high approval rating among their voting base.
Probably not a good idea if they are seeking election for the first time. Definitely not a good idea if they are married to someone of the opposite sex.
I thnk there is one admitted gay member of congress, but this is so unimportant to me, I don't even know who it is.

That is a very interesting question. I think that it is a personal choice of the individual to decide what part of their life is available for public scrutiny. I can see where it would be VERY tempting to "out" them if they were being hypocritical on gay issues... but in the end, it still wouldn't be right.

A gay politician!
Oh no!! My god! It should be flogged in public, then castrated and thrown in the river (or lake or the sea whatever is available anyway).
We cannot have gay people in the government now, can we. Yesssir, we can only have good church going, god fearing, family men.

It is what is done on the congressional floor is what matters not the bedroom. I would rather see an openly gay politician then one who feels he has to lie, because that becomes all to easy and then you have to wonder what else are they lying about.

A person's love life should be treated with privacy and respect, so, no, it is not right to "out" someone. Foley was a hypocrite of the worse order, but, none the less...

no, it is completely wrong, that is being very discriminative. so what if he's gay, if he's a good person and knows what he's doing, let him be. If he's gay so what, straight men tend to be more dangerous now days.

I think it's neither desireable nor acceptable to out anyone. I don't understand this penchant some trolls have to stick their noses into matters that don't concern them.

If they want to come out they will and if they don't they won't. It is their choice, not ours.
