http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia
ikipedia was launched as the English Wikipedia on January 15, 2001, as a complement to Nupedia, an expert-written and now defunct encyclopedia. The project is now operated by the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization created by Jimmy Wales, and has over six million articles in 250 languages,[1] including 1.6 million in the English edition. Wikipedia has steadily risen in popularity since its inception[3] and currently ranks among the twelve most-visited websites worldwide.[4]

First it might help to explain the concept of a wiki.
A wiki is a website designed to allow users to add, remove, and otherwise edit and change content, typically without the need for registration. It uses a simplified system of text formatting and linking words to other entries within the wiki and to outside websites.
Wikipedia is an encyclopedia built using the wiki concept.
Anyone with Internet access is able to participate.
One of the main rules when participating in Wikipedia is to maintain a neutral point of view or NPOV.
Because Wikipedia can be edited by anybody, it is subject to intentionally incorrect entries, often referred to as vandalism, as well as accidental changes. A built in system of monitoring changes to specific articles, known as watch lists, as well as a list of articles changed by unregistered users help to reduce these types of problems.
Often, multiple users who disagree on a specific fact will continually make changes over a short period of time. This is referred to as a revert war.

Place where the combined knowledge of many people can be shown; Also in many entries, the combined idiocy of people can be amply illustrated. Good thing the Editors are bringing things under control :-)
