Copper is the element with the atomic mass of 63.5 which we recognise as being a soft and pliable orangey coloured metal - like what hot water pipes are made from.

Tarnish is copper oxide. A chemical reaction occurs between the copper and the oxygen in the air causing a dull sheen to appear on the surface of the copper.

If you scratch or cut the copper you see a bright and "clean" orange metal underneath

Basically tarnish is the eqivalent of rust on copper.

those factors tarnish as a results of moisture from the air. you could spray a clean end on them and it will preserve the metallic from oxidizing. you could as properly use hair spray in a pinch. something that seals them from the ambience will artwork.
