It depends what sort of red you want your hair to end up.

If you would like it just to have a red tinge, you can certainly achieve that with standard drugstore dye.

If you want it to be a lighter red than your natural colour, you will need to bleach it first. Bleaching your hair and then dyeing it at home is possible, but difficult, for these reasons:

1. Very hard to predict exactly what colour you'll end up with. Some bleaches and dyes may react together: I have seen people's hair go greenish by accident!

2. Bleach damages the hair pretty badly; it can also burn the skin, as well as wrecking your towels and soft furnishings. It's a lot easier to avoid this problem if you have a friend to help out.

To avoid these problems, you should do a patch test and a strand test of the bleach and the dye 48 hours beforehand, as recommended on the packets. If you turn a strand of hair green and frizzy, it's not so disastrous as if you turn your whole head green and frizzy!

If you are nervous about what the result might be even after the strand test, I suggest you consider giving yourself a few small red highlights or something rather than going for the whole head. It's less of a commitment and will damage much less of your hair. Bleached and dyed hair needs redoing every 4 weeks to cover the roots, and it can look really fried after 3 or 4 root-jobs.

good question, i myself have black hair and its a multistep but simple process.

first you have to bleach your hair to a lighter color. (preferably light blonde for the red to show up the best) follow the directions on the box (bleach your hair, wash hair, condition, dry)

now you can dyr your hair red using the red hair dye,

then youre done!

I would personally bleach first then die it red so the color will get in there better.
