Invest in a good dehumidifier and do a thorough inspection to rule out any excess moisture. Ask to make sure there haven't been any plumbing leaks. Ask about bugs too. Many basements have spiders, centipedes and camel crickets, atleast in NJ. Outside of mold and bugs there isn't anything wrong with staying in a basement. Oh, you might also want to look into a device that tests radon depending on where you live. Just make sure that it is clean and dry and that the whole basement is finished. Our basement is only half underground it is warm in the winter and cool in the summer, but before we finished it there was definitely mold. And there are spiders, more so in the basement than in the rest of our house.

Depending on what part of the country you live in you might want to test for Radon. Certain areas have higher concentrations and I think it builds up in basements more than other areas of a house. Since Radon causes cancer, I would want to check before I moved to a basement, especially with a baby.

You just need to make sure that the apartments is not too humid. If there are leaks or anything else that might help mold grow, you or your baby should move out. You want to make sure that you have windows that you can open. It is important to air out your house often, even if you do not have a baby. You may want to pick up a humidity monitor. You can get these cheap from pet stores, usually in the reptile section. This will be a good indicator, and it is not very expensive. Compare the humidity in your place with the humidity of your area. ( you can usually get this from your local news broadcast. )

If you are thinking about it I would consult her pediatrician to be on the safe side. Many basement apartments are filled with mold, mildew, dampness and insects! They can very cold in the winter, depending on where you live, you also have to take into consideration rainfall, this could cause the basement to flood.

As long as there is no mildew, proper ventilation, and you get her out to get sunlight, she should be fine. I knew a couple living in a basement apartment, and the lack of sunlight caused their son to get sick, so make sure she gets out during the day!

Just make sure that there isn't huge build ups of mold, and I think you'll be fine. If this is a newer suite, I'm pretty sure this won't be a problem.
