sometimes during chemical reactions in the cells, hydrogen peroxide is produced. this substance is poisonous to tissues. catalase in the blood breaks down the hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen so that the poisonous effect of hyrogen peroxide is prevented

Enzymes catalyze or speed up all sorts of reactions in our cells. They increase the rates that we form or break down certain substances. Without them our bodys would be thousands of times less efficient at these reactions and we would probably not survive.
