The Alpha Centauri system consists of three stars orbiting each other. Alpha Centauri A and B are sunlike stars standing close by. Sometimes Alpha Centauri A is closest, and sometimes it is Proxima Centauri. At the moment its Proxima Centauri, a red dwarf orbiting Alpha Cantauri A and B. Its about 5% nearer to the sun than Alpha Centauri A. The distance sun Alpha Centauri is about 4.3 - 4.5 ly.

Proxima Centauri.

The Alpha Centauri system is composed of three stars. Alpha Centauri A and B are close together, Sun-like stars.

Alpha Centauri C is Proxima Centauri. It is a red dwarf that appears to orbit the other two, and at present is 1/20th closer to the Sun.

The closest known star after that is Proxima Centauri, a component of the triple star system denoted Alpha Centauri (the system looks like a single star to the naked eye).
