Obviously, you have tried the professional route, and look where its got ya!

1. I think you should use a semi or demi permanent color. Clairol makes both. There would be no ammonia and it would only deposit color, not lift color, so your natural color would not change. Demi would last longer, Semi will not hurt your hair at all.

2. You might want to get two boxes to be on the safe side. Depending on the thickness of your hair, you might be able to get away with one box, I can if I really stretch it!

3. You want an ash color, that will neutralize the red. I assume you still want to see the highlights. A light ash brown will do the trick. (think of red as warm and ash as cool, they will neutralize each other) That will deposit a color over all of your hair, but you won't detect it in your natural color, as it will be lighter than your natural color. On your highlighted area, it will help neutralize the red. You will need to repeat it weekly or so for semi and monthly or so for demi.

You could always do a perm color but once you do that you will have to keep that up, so I would try and avoid that. Did you complain? No colorist should have let you walk away unhappy. Try going back and telling them it is not what you wanted and see if you can get them to fix it for free! (Yea, right!!)

First of all don't sweat it there are worse things than a bad color job! Ok I am the daughter of a barber and a hairdresser(don't laugh they met at work) but I moved far,far away from home and have been responsible for my own hair ever since(I miss my mommy and free hair do's (lol) Fortunately I learn a lot hangin out at the shop many afternoons, so here goes..... If you had your hair done with anything that involved something called henna(an ingredient not a shade of color) don't use anything labeled permanent, it could result in more problems! But since most places don't use it anymore I'm willing to bet this wont apply to you. I know prices of products can be misleading( the more expensive the better right? wrong!!!!!) The only thing my sister & I use is the "Revlon colorsilk" it is only $3 and sometimes wal-mart even has two for one specials. Now back to the color part
of your question you say you have dark brunette hair, I'm not really sure what color you were going for but I think to be on the safe side you shoud probably go with dark brown(dont worry its called dark brown so it wont be hard to find) and 2 boxes otta do it. Now you might be thinken wait I dont want to go back to brown! But I think until you feel more than comfortable doing it at home you should stick to the basics.(mix to your hearts content later).

Good luck & God Bless

Natural Instincts by Clairol is a Level 2 color, a demi permanent color. It has very low peroxide and no ammonia. It washes out in 24+ shampoos but when using a dark color to cover a lighter color it colors permanently. It's a whole lot safer than a level 3, permanent color. Use should buy two boxes. Any color darker than your red color should cover it but if you're interested in altering the red color just a bit a semi-permanent color would be a temp fix as it lasts 8-10 shampoos with no worries.

Get a rinse that does not contain ammonia so it will not be damaging to your hair. Choose a dark brown, you may have to use two bottles to be sure it covers the red. Since you are pale complexions highlights may not be the best thing for you, especially not red. Perhaps a dark blonde highlight would be better, but not alot.

i'm getting strawberry-blonde and red highlights in medium brown hair and that i imagine it seems reliable. i'm getting various compliments on it even as the colors are clean. red fades instantly, inspite of the truth that, so that you eventually end up with 2 colorations of blonde highlights. which isn't undesirable both.

I know you wanted it to be cheap......but here is my ideas.
First (I know that it will be a lot of money) go to a professional.
Second, before you leave, ask the pro. questions of what to do to get your hair how you want it.(Including brand recomidation, and how many to buy.
Third, go to the store and buy the color die you want and amount you need.
Fourth, go home and die your hair!!

You could do it that way or just have the professional do it for you. Either way, it probably will be expensive!!!

But I would suggest that you don't do it all in one day though!!

I had the same problem with pink...go back to a brown all over (it should cover up the red...if you want to do red again it works to dye what will be red, really light blond first.
