An all too meagre conundrum is spewed up, feast upon it if you will.

Can you name the one,
literary son of the Swan?
Murderer, suicide and general menace,
a tragedy not to understand more of Venice.

For the best answer REASONING should be stated.

A full solution will be posted.

Very good so far.

Swan of Avon = Shakespeare.

Some noble efforts.

Please indulge me as I explain the clues:

The first line needs no explanation.

2nd line

"Literary son of the Swan"

Literary pertaining to literature.

Son defining male gender.

the Swan (not "a" Swan) = The Swan of Avon = Shakespeare.

3rd line

"Murderer, suicide and general menace,"

Murderer, suicide and menace are self explanatory and (only slightly!) narrow choice of potential characters.

General - has double meaning and also describes the military rank.

4th line

"a tragedy not to understand more of Venice."

(I thought this line made it all too easy?)

Tragedy - when combined with Shakespeare should narrow the choices of play and characters. We are after a tragic play.

The line also means it is tragic if you do not understand the words "more of Venice" as you may not be able to provide an adequate answer. - you will see why that’s so important in a sec.

So lets put it all together,

We want a male Shakespearean tragic character. Maybe military, who murders, menaces and kills himself. Something to do with Venice.

I give you

Othello

The lead male character in Shakspeare’s tragic play Othello.

Othello - menaces many, kills his wife and commits suicide.

Othello - is a General in the service of Venice

Othello - is know as the Moor of Venice.

Eternal: In this little battle against ignorance, the charge was lead by Dava. Fine trench work by the estimable Alda. But it is RM’s colours that should fly the highest. A minor victory for enlightenment. The war will continue.

This is driving me nuts!

I'm going to go with Shakespeare too. The Swan theatre is supposedly where he and his company played while looking for a permanent home - hence the literary son of the Swan.
Murderer, suicide and general menace - take your pick, I think he covered it all, and then some.
A tragedy not to understand more of Venice - I'm going with Othello here, also including all of the above and set in Venice.

Can't wait to see the answer.

Although I see the answer of Shakespeare...yet I went more specific as it would be Romeo...the son of a swan and yet he was instructed to go masked to he could see that the swan he chose was actually a crow....when you said literary I took it to be a written person....Alda

Thought a little more..could be Cygnus (from mythology) son of Sthenele...but that does not completely fit...he became a swan...ok back to original answer...looking forward to full solution being posted.

Had to be Shakespeare , because all his genius come from his PEN which made him get a COB on and he also knew a few dodgy merchants from Venice.
