Why are some people so selfish always wanting to receive but never..........................?

giving anything to anyone even when they have it to give. I say this because we have so many people in our family that could give things to others in our family that truly need things like clothes and money but they would rather take them to the salvation army or donate money to some other people that they don't even know. And i just don't get it why are they like this? And these family members that never give are the one's that always recieve things from other family members. What is the problem?
