Here are the details. I am 20 weeks pregnant and I just got over some kind of weird stomach flu thing. I also live in Iowa and we just got a huge blizzard of snow. On March 1st, we had white out conditions and for today (March 2nd) they are advising that you only travel when neccesary. Also, my landlord is an older man and he still hasn't been able to plow the snow from the sidewalks and parking by my apt. The snow is thigh deep and very slippery.

Because I feel very uneasy about the weather and I just got over an illness, I called work and told them I wouldn't be able to make it in. They were a little pissed off about it, but I don't feel like swimming through 4 ft of snow.

Did I make the right decision? What would you have done?

To reply to Kraftee:

I was sick on tuesday (Feb 27) and didn't go in that day. I was still sick on wednesday, but that was my day off. And then on thurday, my work was CLOSED due to weather! Also, after going back to work today (Mar. 5th) I found out that they closed easrly on the day in question, friday march 2nd. So I would have only gotten 3 hrs of work anyway. Would that be worth it to swim through all that snow?

What you did was justifiable. I'm curious, though. Did you go to work on the days that you really were sick?

At 20 weeks they must know you are pregnant. If they were closed too some of the time, they already know the weather is a problem.
Only you can judge what you need to do, but try also to look at things from their point of view. It's very hard to run a business without their employees and the weather is already causing them to lose money. Also..it would be wise to have some slippery-proof boots or some cleats to put on your shoes, because you don't want a fall when you are pregnant.

You must have considered the weather when you took this job, so try not to miss too much. And you could probably help to make amends by offering to work on a day off to make up for it....just try to explain you still weren't feeling well...but that you don't want to be undependable.

I'd say it's a toss-up!

i think you did the right thing, that is your baby i there, if you or the baby gets hurt is your work going to take care of you, and if something happened would your work be the one to go through the suffering of having a miscarriage??? i don't think so, right now you need to tell your boss whats up, your baby is your number one priority and thats good. if they still insist on treating you unfairly call the corporate office for whoever you work for, trust me you have the higher hand here, your the one who is pregnant!!! Also they can be as mad as they want to but your baby is going to thank you in a million different ways!! it's deffinatley worth pissing off a few people over minor things!!!! Good luck

I think you absolutely made the right decision! You wouldn't want to fall down or get in an accident and hurt the baby or you. I would not feel bad at all. Honestly, I think your work should be more understanding.

You have to think of your baby. If you had fallen, something bad could have happened. If your work doesn't understand that's too bad. You definitely made the right decision.

Hmm.

I'm in Canada; we just got a ton of snow dumped on much of my province, and I was out sloshing around in it last night; much fun. No, I'm not being sarcastic; I love a good storm.

Snow's pretty soft if you're going to fall.

That said, if it was a one-time sort of lazy, I see no problem...

Sounds like the right decision to me. You have to consider your safety and the safety of the little one in your belly too!

You TOTALLY made the right decision. You and your baby's health comes first. You can ALWAYS get another job. This is WAY more important! I am 3.5 months pregnant and would have done the same thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
