Oh, man, I tried working as a CNA on the night shift and it sucked bad. I did it for like 3 months and I still couldn't get used to it. I wanted to go to sleep so badly when it got around 2 am and I was just miserable.
I found what helped the most is to be active, like walking around or busying yourself with something. I always took something to crochet.
Reading made me even sleepier, so I don't know how you're gonna do with that paperwork, lol.

This depends very highly on the person. If you are able to sleep during the day after work. Then it wont be that bad for you. Many people can't do that.
I've worked all types of shifts and was lucky enough to not have much of an issue since I could go to and stay asleep at basically any hour of the day if Im tired. Im also the type that doesnt need a whole lot of sleep to get through a day. Usually 6 hours does it for me. I guess I got used to that in my college days. 3 hours of sleep before an exam....NOT cool! But i lived.

I worked graveyards for 2 years and I never really adjusted. I felt fine at work and like you I stay up late. The problem was that my mind never seemed to be right. I had a hard time concentrating and sleeping a decent amount. Try to get on a schedule, meaning go to sleep and eat at the same time and wake up at the same time if possible.

well, i worked a mix of graveyards and day shifts for the first time last summer. it was a 12 hour shift (8pm - 8am or the other way around for the day shift). It was at a glass plant so all i did was either inspect or pack bottles or sweep and clean.. so it was pretty boring. i'd always fall assleep lol. but i got used to it eventually. i'd just sleep durring the day as soon as i got home. at first i'd only get like 4 hours sleep but it got better as it went.. so long as nobody bothers u when ur tryin to rest!

I've been working graveyard shifts for 9 years, 11pm-7am shifts. I drink a lot of coffee, like 3-4 cups every night.

Well, in my experience music is one of the best things to keep yourself awake. If you can either play some music on a radio, or even an mp3 player, you are set. Bring a snack along for when the time comes that you need a little pick-me-up.

I purchased a high intensity light that I would use during the shift.
It really helped me to stay awake, and I was able to sleep easier when I finished.
