I have always wanted to go to New Zealand and was thinking of heading there for a month maybe in December. I was thinking of going on my own but don't know how safe it is to do this, has any one any information for me?? I am 35 by the way and am not fussy wether I stay in hotels or hostels.

December is a good time to go but you should realise that most NZers are on annual leave at that time of year, usually 20th to around mid January, and all school children will be on holidays too. I think if you are a sociable person you will have many oportunities to link up with nice ppl at this time but also you may have to map out an itinery and make accom bookings before you go as places to stay will be heavily booked, paticularly the beachside cities and towns. Have a nice KIWI Xmas !

I live in New Zealand and am a professional in the tourism industry. It is very safe - you will be fine. However, like anywhere else in the world you should always be weary in certain places.

As for a good time to visit - December is okay, not so busy early on but post Christmas will be busy with school holidays. If you want brilliant weather go for March/April but these are quite busy with lots of other tourists around.

As far as safety is concerned you'll be fine. Depending on which part you visit of course, New Zealand is NOT an unsafe place. But going there in December, depending on where you are from, the weather is going to be hot. Not as hot as Australia, but never-the-less NZ will be heading into summer. Make sure you take suitable clothing and sun protection. Hope you have a great trip!

Yes, it's as safe as anywhere can be. I'm also female and travelled round NZ for several months on my own a few years ago when I was 25. I travelled by bus and stayed in dorms in hostels and never felt threatened... I had far more problems when I lived in London.

New Zealand is a very safe place. Like anywhere pay attention to were you are going but in general you should have no problems.

You could not find a safer place. There are exceptions, probably certain areas of Auckland, but any prudent traveler has nothing to worry about. The sheepskin comment also applies to sluppers, not just coats.

You should have no problems - but don't wear sheepskin coats and go ba-aa-aa.
