My friend at work was given the choice to resign or be fired for something he did at work that wasn't very nice. He choose to resign. Now everyone he worked with knows why he was let go because the manager told everyone. Before he was let go the manager assured him that no one would find out. He lives in a small town and because the manager told other employees half the town knows. My friend is extremely embarassed for what he did and thought no one would find out if he resigned. Can his employer tell everyone?

Your friend can now sue your employer for the embarrassment that he is suffering, for sharing priveleged information, and for hurting his chances of being granted other employment. Most employers know that you NEVER give any information about a former employee, other than, name, time employed, and whether or not they would be eligible for rehire...no more details than that if you don't want a legal battle.

not unless your friend writes this manager as a personal or work reference. If he wirites down on application where he works and not use this employer as a reference then when someone calls and verifies all the manger can mention is time he started and time he left. There is a loophole though where human resource may ask ,manager if your friend is re-hire able and if manager says no then this can be damaging. At least this is how it works in texas.

I dont think that he is legally bound to keep his word. I do feel sorry for your friend though. Whatever he did must be pretty bad.

I guess that your buddy should have bahaved himself to start with - then he wouldn't have faced getting fired.
