ppm is a unit of measure telling the amount (expressed in "parts") of substances that causes hardness per "million parts" of water, while Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) is the aggregate amount (also expressed in "parts") of all dissolved substances that passed through a standard sized filter, per million parts of water. These dissolved substances may include contributors and non-conctibutors to the hardness of water as long as they can pass through the 45 micron pore of the filter and remain as residue on the vessel upon drying at a specified temperature.
