my three year old helps load, transfer and unload. He's too short to reach the buttons so that's all he can do for now.

There is a wonderful book at amazon.com and other places called 401 Ways to Get Your Kids ...... and in the back it has a list of chores your children should be able to do at what ages, and starts at age 2 1/2. Everyone who does laundry or housekeeping etc. has their own standards. I sort all of my laundry and my daughter, grown and married, she doesn't. Depends on how picky the person in charge is I suppose

Ummm....
By age 2 my kid were helping put their laundry in the hamper and in their drawers.
By 4 or 5 they were learning to fold and were helping to put laundry in and out of the machines.
By about the age of 8 they were doing loads of laundry by themselves - not every load, but they had chores and occasionally did a load of laundry. By this age they were expected to bring their laundry to the laundry room and then when the laundry was clean they were to put it away neatly. They are now 16 and 18 and are great helpers! My son actually thanked me the other day for helping him to be so independent. Hopefully when he goes to college this fall he won't have to bring laundry home with him!

The younger ones are too small to reach. My daughter started doing her own laundry at 11.

My 9 year old does most of hers. My 7 year old sorts, loads, transfers, and folds. My two year old puts her dirty clothes in her hamper and throws her own diapers away.... She's been doing both since shortly after she started to walk. All of the above make life easier for me and boost my children's self esteem by the praise they get and the satisfaction of doing it for themselves.
My mother on the other hand would not let us lay a finger on her Maytag washer and dryer...To this day she even gets a little weird about me doing it if we are there for a visit! (She's out of state.)

you know, i was doing my own laundry when i was 8. and when my sister was 8 and i was still doing hers and i said something to my parents, they said "you weren't doing your own laundry when you were 8." yeah. right. when my son gets old enough, he will watch me to see how it's done, help me do it, and then do it himself. it has nothing to do with age. it has to do with being able to do it.

as long as the 3 yr old isn't doing it alone. however hands could get caught in the agitate. forgetting to clean out the lint is a fire hazard!
