It depends on the kid. My son was only 1 and crawling out of the crib (not safe) so we moved him first to a mattress on the floor and then moved the mattress into the toddler bed. My daughter on the other hand was over 2 (she was small and never climbed out of the crib). I think you have to do what is best for your child and keep safety in mind.

Mine were 2 years old and so tall they weren't fitting in the crib very well anymore. We could have done it at 18 months, but we waited until after their 2nd birthday.
I went right for the twin bed with rails on the sides. It's hard enough getting rid of the crib, so why make them go from crib to toddler bed then into a twin bed a year later? We went from the crib to the twin bed with all of our kids. Toddler bed frames cost as much as most twin mattress sets, so we skipped that step.
Now get ready to teach him to STAY in his big boy bed. It can be done, buy Jo Frost's Super Nanny book - it works! Good luck!

My 5 year old moved to a bed (I never used a toddler bed, just a twin bed) when he was 19 months. That was because I had another baby coming, so we wanted to get him used to a new bed. He did fine; I put up a baby gate in his doorway so he couldn't wander out. He slept on his floor a few times and then I guess realized the bed was better. My daughter moved when she was 17 months, and that was because the crib (a hand-me-down) had duct tape keeping the legs together, so we figured it was time! She did great, she had watched her brother sleep in his bed.

I moved my child into a toddler bed when age 2 or 3 yrs. When old enough to walk, and climb out of the crib, it's safer to do the toddler bed. It's shorter in height than regular beds, and makes them feel "bigger" . Take care.

Mine is 19 months and she started climbing out of her crib. I put her in the toddler bed and had to put a baby gate in the doorway so she couldn't "escape" :) She has gotten into the dresser drawers and pulled out all her clothes many times so far, but other than that, she's adjusting really well.

Falling down while climbing out of the crib.
Jumping up and down in the crib, causing it to almost fall apart.
I moved her to a toddler bed at 13 months.
