First off, try not to worry or be nervous. I know that seems hard not to, but the more you worry and the more nervous you are, the scarier it'll be. I believe that knowledge is key, so here is a key to help calm your nerves:
Make sure you get to the airport with plenty of time to check in, go through security, and fine your concourse and gate. Rule of thumb is to allow yourself 2-5 hours before your flight. Call the airport ahead of schedule to see what their wait time is for that specific day.
Make sure you have all your documents with you (picture ID or passport, visa if needed, and ticket). Also make sure that you are not taking any forbidden items with you.
Now you are ready for your flight!
When you taxi, you barely feel the plane move at all. At this point the cabin crew will tell you all you need to know about what to do in case of emergencies and such.
When the plane prepares for liftoff, it starts to go really fast down the runway, and then within 45 seconds you are up in the air. Things may seem a little wobbly at first, but that's just because of moving through the different altitudes. Your ears will pop as you climb through the altitudes also. (chewing gum, drinking something, swallowing, or yawning will alleviate the pressure.)
Once you are in the air, things will feel smooth. You will hear the humm of the engines, but that's normal, nothing to worry about. I actually find it relaxing. If there is turbulence, you might feel the plane wobble a little bit, but remember, planes are designed to withstand this, so take a deep breath and try not to think about it.
When you are approaching landing, your ears will pop as you descend through the altitudes (remember: chewing gum, drinking something, swallowing, or yawning will alleviate the pressure). You will feel the plane slow down and the cabin crew will prepare you for landing. When the plane touches down it kind of feels like a short jolt, and then you hear them cut the engines off and the plane slows down pretty fast.
From there, the plane will taxi to either the gate or the designation where a bus will pick you up. You wait for the plane to decompressurize a few moments before they start letting the passengers out. That was your flight.
To entertain yourself:
- Bring along a few book, magazines, puzzles (such as crosswords or Sodoku if you like those).
- Bring along an iPod, MP3 player, or CD player to listen to music.
- A laptop is good to have as you can play games on it, connect to the internet, and get any work done that you may have.
- Try talking to the people next to you. Sometime you will meet some really interesting people, and forge friendships.

I remember flying for my first time. It was actually a great experience. I was also scared at first but to be honest flying on a plane is pretty relaxing... minus the babies crying the whole flight. All you have to do is go on the plane with a good thoughts and try to let go what has happened around the world. Get to know the person that you will be sitting next to, It might just be the coolest person you will ever meet. I find taking a nap is the best way to calm my nerves. It is a little uncomfortable on the plane so make sure to take something that will make you comfortable especially around the neck area. Take advantage of the Drinks and food they serve you. Some people say its nasty but i beg to differ. I think it is actually pretty good. (This is coming from a person who eats MREs). Wathc the movie they show to take your mind of the flight and make you feel like you are in your living room with a whole bunch of other people. It's not bad as long as you go on the plane with clear thoughts. Take the time to clear your mind and not think of anything but where you are going and what is there for you when you get there. I hoped this helped out a little for ya.

I would think of this fact - even if the airline doesn't appear to care that much about their passengers - the plane you will be flying on is worth several millions of dollars - so they are going to care about that. Air travel is safer than driving - there is much more safety equipment built into an airplane than a car. Focus on the fun aspects - sit by a window and enjoy the view - it is facinating above the clouds. Also, it is worth mentioning to the flight attendants if you are nervous they will help you understand anything you feel unnerved by; noises etc. Remember - they do this as a job so they know what is normal and what isn't.
Enjoy your flight!

first off, stop psycing yourself out. it will be okay, they actually say that flying is the safest form of travel. i enjoy it more then driving because i get headaches when i drive, plus going inbtwn clouds and stuff is really neat.
you might want ot bring a book or puzzle book, notebook, so form of entertainment to keep you busy and focused on that and not on the flight. bring gum for take off and landing so your ears wont pop.maybe bring a book on the place of where you are going so you can see some things to do there. if you want, after you go through the metal detectors, and waiting for your ride, go to some of the near by shops around your terminal... buy a snack for the flight.they generally start boarding about a 1/2 hour before they take off, so stay near your gate. i would suggest going to the bathroom before going on so you dont have to go on the plane. if you ever need help just call for a stewartess, they should be able to help you.
have a nice flight/trip. and dont worry=]

I fly close to 100 times a year for work mostly. I'm far more scared to drive than I am to fly. And statistically, flying is much safer.

Airline travel is quite safe, more people die from auto accidents than plane crashes.
Remember when you are in your seat, keep your elbows pulled in a little on both sides, that way you don't crowd the other passengers on either side.
Oh one more thing, if this is a long trip then at check in time ask them for a seat away from where they seat mothers and babies. . . .

I'm sure I will get some criticism for this, but I say have yourself a drink before you get on the plain. One stiff drink should do it. I'm not a big drinker, but if there is something that is making me anxious, I will either have a beer or a good mixed drink to and I will be calmed down. That doesn't mean hit up the drink cart the entire time you are in the air, just have one.

Flying is MUCH safer than driving. How many plane crashes do you hear about in the US every year? Maybe 2 or 3 at most. How many car crashes do you hear about? Tons daily! So you're at more risk driving to the airport than you are on the actual airplane!
Philippians 4:7
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Completey honest answer------ask your dr to prescribe like 5 very low dose valume. Seriously it will work. I fly often, but hate it. I have a "calm down" type of pill that I ONLY take when flying. It just keeps you calm. There are other meds out there if you don't want to take valume.
I really don't advise meds, BUT they do work and they work for me.
