I hear it a lot lately. It's usually a plug-in acting up. The Yahoo toolbar is notorious for this. The Google toolbar is running second. You may want to uninstall either if you have them as your first step.
If your using IE (Switch to firefox, it's a superior browser) go to Tools-->Internet Options and hit the Programs tab. Now click on the Manage Add-Ons tab.
Now you see a list of add-ons. Click Disable for all of them. Disable the ActiveX controls as well. Now try to surf. If the problem doesnt reoccur go back and turn them on one at a time and surf after each one. You should find the bugger fairly quickly though be aware that it could be 2 or more conflicting with each other so while you are there check to see if you have a couple trying to do the same thing.
In essence the error means Instruction (program or add-on) referenced memory (a certain spot a certain RAM chip). The memory could not be read. (Something else was using it or they hit at close enough to the same time to cause an error. They argued over the usage and you lost.Nice huh?)
The next cause is Malware, probably spyware using an activex control. If the above doesnt work, try the list below. I follow it and remain malware free.
1st-Make sure to get all Windows updates DLed and installed.
1st A:Many versions of malware can, and do, hide in your system restore files. If you are sure you have a malware infection, go to Start-->Control Panel-->System and click on the System Restore tab and put a check in the 'Turn off System Restore' box. Turn it back on after you are clean.
2nd-Go to BitDefender.com for a free virus scan and cleaning. TrendMicro now charges to clean.
3rd-Download, install, and update Lavasofts's Ad-Aware (free). Do a full system scan and delete the crap it finds. Do this weekly.
4th-Download, install, and update SaferNetworking's SpyBot Search & Destroy (free). Do a full system scan and delete the crap it finds. Do this weekly
5th-download, install and update AVG Anti-spyware.(Both free and paid versions available).Do a full system scan and delete the crap it finds. Do this weekly.
If you dont have a firewall, GET ONE. ZoneAlarm has a free version.
If you dont have an anti-virus, GET ONE. Both AVG and Avast have a free version but I recommend Nod32. It's the best available and it's not very expensive (about $40 US.) Install, update and do a full system scan at least weekly.
We all hate the 'weekly' stuff but it's necessary in today's net environment. "Get it clean and keep it clean!" should be your motto.
If this doesnt fix the problem, download HiJack This from MajorGeeks.com. Go to techsupportforum.com (there are others but this a good, free site) for instructions. DO NOT use HiJack This unless you are extremely knowledgeable about Windows and it's processes. You can seriously Bork your system. Let the pro's direct you.
For a safer, more secure, easier to use not mention faster browser, try Mozilla FireFox. For an e-mail client try Mozilla Thunderbird.
