In addition to changing the XP welcome screen you can turn off notification in Outlook via Tools > Options > Other > Advanced Options > Reminder Options

Well you can set the laptop sound for mute. You can also open the Control Panel, and select Sounds. Uncheck the entry for New Mail.

Usually in your e-mail options there is something that you can select that stops it from logging into the email account automatically, or alerting you if you have new emails.
